Week 2 of a 4 week course taught by Brad Warner Tuesdays in May.
“Maka-hannya-haramitsu: Mahāprajñāpāramitā” from Dogen’s Shobogenzo. Chanting the Heart Sutra in Sino-Sanskrit. Dogen’s take on the Heart Sutra. Form is Form, Emptiness is Emptiness.
The Great Heart of Perfect Wisdom Sutra (aka Heart Sutra) is so short it takes just a couple of minutes to recite the whole thing. Yet it is the foundational text of Zen Buddhism. It packs almost all of the important philosophical ideas of Zen Buddhism into a beautifully compact poetic statement.
The four-week class will include the history of the sutra, its meaning, the meanings of various words and concepts referenced in the sutra, its usage in Zen temple services, instructions on chanting the sutra, and more. We will examine Dogen’s writings on the Heart Sutra as well as those of other ancient and modern teachers. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and suggestions for further aspects of the sutra they’d like to study.
Attendees are encouraged to review chapter 3 from “Don’t Be a Jerk” as preparatory reading for this class.
